April 11th 63 I received your kind letter last night was much pleased to hear you was will I am the same & all of the rest in this part of the army as far as I know We have been in this place over two weeks live first rate & dont have much duty to do at present but dont know how soon we may Jane whilst we have been out here we have taken some 30 or 40 prisoners

Arlington March 27 63 Dear Jane I have neglected to or rather delayed writing for a week, received your last a week ago today sold your shaker took the money & your yarn went down to the office Monday had it weighed it would have cost 76 cents to send it we thought it would not pay. Otho is hear will start for Burr Oak tomorrow or Tuesday & I will send the thing by him perhaps he will not get there within 1 or 2 weeks

Tennissee Denmark Feb 23rd 63 Dear Jane I Recd your letter last night & hasten to reply to it we are all well & hope you are the same in Burr Oak I am at this time on picket or Guard, have been in this place for nearly 2 weeks have fine times plenty to eat you wrote you were going out to Burr Oak with Daniel & Mary I can say I wish I was there too think I could enjoy myself prety well I would like to hear some good music right well about now.

Camp east of Jackson Jan 19/63 Dear Jane & Parents I have seated myself to pen a few lines to you this leaves me all well & hope it will find you the same to day is one of the toughest days I have seen we have about six inches of snow but it is raining & has been all day Ed & myself Recd some mail the other day but I was out on a scout & have not had a chance to write to you so you will have to excuse my delay But I will say that I certainly was glad to hear from home had made up my mind that you had almost forgot that you had friends in the sunny South.

Camp near Waterford Dec 27th 62 Dear Wife & Parents this leaves me well & all of the boys with us I am with the baggage train Edwin Albert & most of Co C & in fact most all of the Cav are after a band of Rebels that came in to Holly Springs & cut our communications off Burnt our stores of Provisions & took all of the sick & some of the well Prisoners but we have made them pay for it. Our men have taken. The report is that 1200 Rebl cav out near Salem they have been out 1 week from camp

Camp Near Water Valley Dec 19 62 I have seatted myself to answer your kind letter that came to hand yesterday the date being Dec. 5th & it being the only one that I have rec but one & that date was Nov 28th I was at Holly Springs sick with the ague & did not get it until I got to my Co I tell you the boys had a tough time of it for they had to skirmish all the way from Holly Springs to a place called Coffee Ville & we met with some loss had two men wounded but not very bad Ealsworth & Van from Jackson & one from Paw Paw Daskmum Noble will know who he is these were men of our Co

Tuesday Dec 9th Holey Springs Dear Wife I have got able to go to my Regt got a discharge from the Hospital & am now waiting a chance to go the provition train will be in tomorrow & then I go to the boys they have done some hard fighting but I heard that none of them have been killed they have taken over 700 prisoners & a sargeant told me that the Colonel Commanding got word that Price had surendered his whole army to Gen. Steel & I dont doubt it for they desert from him by hundreds

When I received your last letter I was with our regiment on the banks of the Tallahatchie river, that river that the secesh? said the [ ? ] Yankees never could cross but alas for secesh? boasting we have been within ten miles of Grenada and forty miles south of the Tallahatchie.

Detroit Barracks Dec 4th 1862 Cousin Jane Your letter came to hand to day and as I have got my days work all closed up. I seat myself to give a brief reply in return. You will see by this this that I still remain in Detroit. Probably Shall during life. Think it is a very [ ? ] climate much more so than further South. I have not heard from Mitchell nor Ed since they left here. Have written to Mitchell once but recd no reply.

Thursday morning Nov 6th 1862 Camp South of Grand Junction Miss Dear wife I have seated myself on the ground with my poncho on my lap for a Writing Desk so you will have to excuse bad writing. After this I will write what transpires daily commencing last Sunday night in the morning about three oclock the horne sounded Boots & Saddles & the Order was for each man to have 6 days rations in haversack to be ready to start at 6 oclock it came & found 51 men ready to start where we knew not the horne sound stand to horse, next came the command Mount – The order was obeyed & we start in the direction of Chewalla passed it about 10 oclock our course lay in a Westerly direction marched untill night

Sunday Evening Oct the 2ond Wall Jane it is 8 oclock but I will write a few lines, Vicky wrote you last week while I was sick I was quite sick for 3 days had the Disentary & billious feaver Duane had it & was just getting better when I was taken, we had Row 1 s peace & got along verry well. the rest of the friends are well, Henry Shirwood got home friday looks better than they expected, John Rey is home on a forlow brought the ball that was taken out of his neck

We are all quite well but Isiah Hant he has got the dysentery quite bad he is agoing to the Hospital to night for we think it is best for him for we cant help him in camp.
