Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp near Jackson Feb. 9th 63 I have seated myself to reply to your letter that came to hand last night the date was Jan 30th you write that you don’t get any mail from me I have writen to you every time I Rec a letter from home & if you dont get them I am not to blame John Recd a letter from Carl last night stating that he was the only one you all depend on for news I can only say that I think that I write as much as John. But enough of this We are all well with exceptions of bad colds which prevail in camp to a great extent. we have our cabbins all built & stables & now we have to guard our camp & scout & this morning we have to go on one of those pleasure rides which the soldier loves so well Start at Nine & it is daylight now you would laugh to see me I think & all of the rest at meal time our food consists of hard tacks bacon pork once in a while beans & this morning we have light bread on our scout we have to take five days rations now I dont want you to think that we dont live on the top shelf for we do & have good times generally Ed is all right & so is [ ? ] Dave got a letter from the schoolman tell her Dave came very near loosing his Pego by a shot from a Rebels ball It is rather strange that you dont get that money I sent to you Henry Chatfield leaves from home in a few days & I will send you some money how much I cant tell now for I depend on the boys for it etc When we come home from the scout I will write to you & give you full detail of what I see etc etc now Jane keep up good courage Mother I thank you for those stamps & hope some time I will be there to tell of it but who can tell now we have orders to saddle up kiss little Trudy for me my best respects to all from MHH to Jane Jane this is the 2nd letter that I have remailed to you & I expected to have hird from you today but did not I received a letter from Edd dated 2 days later than yours, he was not well could not keep eny thing down & I guess he could not get much to keep down, he sais tell Jane that Mitchell sais he would give 3 dollars to see his woman but he says I would give more than that to see mine, he sais he thinks he will get over his sickness & if he dont he shant crawl out of it as Jim did. there has been someone here ever since you went away. Chappel & wife were hear last saturday staied all knight so that we did not go to hear Jacks funeral sermon preacher Abner Eaton is dead, Rhoda’s school was out today she & Ruth have gone to Monrows to surprise this evening. I have maid Vicky a dress & Duane a vest this week, shall write to the boys sunday & I sent them some stamps Edd sais they do not get any onley from home. Write in return mail. Edd wrote to have me send him a pair of socks & I shall Tuesday. I sent your 2 last paper to the boys (is that all right) These little beads are some that Edd sent in his letter to Trudy he got them at holly springs. Dear friend Susan as I have an opportunity I will [ ? ] words to you. to day was the last day of school I thought I should be glad but I am sorry how long does your school keep or has it let out now I bet if you were out here we culd have some good times how did you like the things I sent you I would have sent you some thing nice but I did not have time. I will now say a few words to Jane.
