Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Near Water Valley Dec 19 62 I have seatted myself to answer your kind letter that came to hand yesterday the date being Dec. 5th & it being the only one that I have rec but one & that date was Nov 28th I was at Holly Springs sick with the ague & did not get it until I got to my Co I tell you the boys had a tough time of it for they had to skirmish all the way from Holly Springs to a place called Coffee Ville & we met with some loss had two men wounded but not very bad Ealsworth & Van from Jackson & one from Paw Paw Daskmum Noble will know who he is these were men of our Co The loss of our Regt probly will not exceed 15 in all taken prisoner killed & wounded but Co M met with a loss that they feels day before yesterday they were out on a scout & run on a party of Rebs ambushed & had their Lieutenant shot & one of their privates also his name was Mackentee & one of the best men we had in our Regt to. The boys are all well Ed has writen home twice since the skirmish you asked me to tell you how Ed makes it go he does well & is a first rate horseman & makes a tip top soldier the boys all like well & he is tough & healthy weighs 137 lbs Albert is all right & well he got a letter from Spence & one from kit last night they are all well Dave Dehaven is well & never was fleshier sends his best respects to all & Gran Pa & Gran Ma to & Ruth must take a share too tell Kate we aint all dead down in old Dixie yet if Dave did get a hole in his pants near the lower Button hole Ben Bridges is well I let him read your letter last night he thinks it hard that they dont write to him Jane you ask me if I want Jerry Bridges to have a Old King I can only say that I want you to keep him as long as he lives or til I come home for I think more of him than the worth of 4 heifers Ben Ewings has got well & all right now Mother you ask me to tell you about Ruths intended I have nothing to say & I dont want you to let Ruth see this When Jane s to those gloves I can get along with out them & I will send you a five dollars greenback I a chance to excane some Confederate scrip for Uncle Sams money ten dollars worth I have to close this in order to send it by this mail Send some papers if you can I have made a bet with Ruths Beau of our bounty my bet is this that fighting will cease before next 4 July & he bet it would not Jane do the best you can with all I send you My best respects to all        MHH NB Ruths Beau says tell Ruth he will write As soon as his eyes gets better
