About the Author
Marion A. Shafer was born on August 3, 1838 in Yates, New York. Shafer lived in Paris, Michigan when he enlisted as a Private in the 7th Michigan Cavalry Company G on December 10, 1862. At the age of 24, he mustered into service and promoted to Sergeant on January 23, 1863. On June 24, Shafer was transferred from Company G to Field and Staff and was promoted to Hospital Steward. His other promotion was to Assistant Surgeon on July 7. Marion A. Shafer was discharged from service on November 7, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
