Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp near Petersburg— August 4th 64 –Skinner Dear Sir It seems strange that I do not get a letter from you. I have been looking for one for several days. I think there is something wrong about the mail. I wish you would write me as soon as you get this and let me know about the bounty. I have understood that I could not get any County bounty. How is that. I see by the papers that the 3rd Mich is at Grand Rapids. I wish I did not belong to the (5th) then I might be home, too. Some of our old boys are getting up companys I see. Success to the new Third. We returned from that last Raide north of the James without loss to our regt but, returned to support the ninth Corps while they blowed up that fort. And the whole affair was a fizzle wiht heavy loss on both sides. I guess our Genrls will make up their minds that negro troops wont fight any better than white ones. We are having a good rest now, and we are not liable to do much right away. We got paid yesterday, but I dare not send any money away now for the Mail Communications are not all together safe. I think. please write soon and write all the news. Now I will close my letter with much love to all. C. Weight
