Regiment: 5th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp 5 Mich Cav Aug 3rd 1864 Miss Hutchings Yours of the 20 is at hand & I take this opertunity to answer it. I am well & at City Point now waiting to take the Boat for Washington. Our Division is loding now. I espect we are a going thare to help to drive the Rebels out of Maryland. You will hear from Mich. Briggade a gain soon if you take the papers. We have had a good many hard fights this summer & lost a good many men. I have ben in evry fight that our Regiment has been in but thank the Lord I am all right yet. They is fighting a long the line more or less evry day. They is a good many lives lost here. I suppose you have hurd of the blowing up of a fort at Petersburg. That is 5 miles from here. I dont know whare Adelbert is. I havent hurd from him since he was taken Prisner. I suppose the young folks thare have some good times. I would like to be thare but we have a little job to finish first. I have one year to stay in the Service yet before my time is out. It is very warm & dry here this summer. I have had some good times on Grand River & your neighborhood. I am in hopes those times will come once more. I expect they are all a geting married out thare but I guess they will be some of the Girles left for the Soldiers when they get home.
