Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Chattanooga Tenn August 5th 1864 In Camp by the Mill Dear Sister I will now try and answer your letter that I have just recieved. I was Glad to hear from you but I should like to hear from you oftener you asked me why I dident write to you oftener I answered your letter as soon as I recd it but yours was dated the sixth of July and I dident get it till after the 20th your letter found us all well I never felt as well in my life as I do now only I have got pretty sore eyes but I no duty. We left the woods last Monday Morning and we got down here just after dark Monday P.M. But we dident have no march there was thirty three of us came down in an an old [   ?   ] me had a fine time. We would stop and get apples and green corn once and and a while. Me brought down about twenty bushel of green corn dinner is most ready and I shall have to wait and finish my letter after dinner what you dank? I shall have to or go with out my dinner and you know that I wont do that. After Supper I suppose that you see that I dident finish this letter after dinner. I have been to work [  ?  ] the last help -ing lay a platform and it made me sweat like the old harry. It is awful warm weather down here now. But it isent as warm now as it has been you said you thought that you had done a hard days work. But I cant see it hard work to go a visiting. I should to go visiting the ladies very much. I dont know what you can think of me you say that you have lots to say and dont know how to say it I had rather pack a rail two hours than write a letter I wish I knew whether Pa wanted any money or not we are going to be payed off in a few days and if I was sure that he dident need any. I shouldent draw any but as I ante sure I guess that I will take it. I sent you $5. Just before the fourth as a present you never said whether you got it as not. I bought me a revolver just after I came down here and paid 15 dollars for it and let one of the veterans take it to canada and he lost it and paid me sixteen dollars for it I havent had any letters from Hudson in a long time and I dont know if I ever shall we are going to leave here a week from next Monday or there abouts. We expect to go down to Marietta it is about a hundred miles from here.
