Regiment: 1st Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Jefferson Davis, Joseph Hooker M.D. Oct 1 st, 1861 Dear cousin       I am sorry that our folks are all dead but I hope there is still one left to answer this letter. I have not heard from any of you since I left Home. I have written about five letters to you and Joe Morris and our folks, but I have received no answer. I have used up all my postage stamps and the secesh don’t keep any for the boys borrow of them to much. One of our boys was shot last night on guard. He stood about 8 rods from a sessionist house. Three companys have been detailed for guard this morning and have gone out on the Baltimore and Washington R.R. which is infront of our campCamp. There is a battery on a hill over us. We belong to Hooker’s Brigade. There is plenty of fruit in the woods which I do not remember the name of, but none in the orchards. Secesh cedar and Hemlock rails make a very nice camp fire. Borrowing chickens, geese and pigs has pretty much played out for there is none left. The secessionists are often caught drilling herein Bladensburg and broght into camp. The guns were roaring at chain bridge when we left Washington. The boys getting their blood up and want to fight. You have got all the news you deserve this time so good bye. Your affectionate cousin Wm. Frost Direct to William F. Frost Co G. First Regiment of Michigan Infantry, Washington, District of Columbia I will send you a piece of a rope that a Lady threw up on top of the cars to me when we were in Williamsport, Penn. and told me to hang JEFF with it.
