Regiment: 19th Indiana Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Fort Baker Virginia Sept 30th 1861 To Our [“Navy Yard” Image]Dear Sister Elizabeth we take this opportunity of writing to you to let you know that we are only tolleable well Still we are able to go around & feel better than for some days past Elihu is now very well we will tell you that we are in virginia & have been for some 2 or 3 weeks we have been doing some pickett Duty but have had no particular fighting with the enemy yet our regiment is out now the union troops on Saturday night took falls Church & Munson’s Hill our Regiment marched out to the church early yesterday morning but the South had left before they got their we think that there was a fight this morning over west of us this morning but do not know wher we could har the cannon verry distinctly our regiment was out last night & we do not know whether they went out to that fight or not. we had orders to strike our tents to moove this morning & we got the tents all tore down & then we got orders to wait for further orders & we are laying hear in the hot sun waiting for further orders we may have orders to leave hear & we may have orders to Rais our tents hear this evening we cannot tell what we will do but will try to be ready. We want you to write to us as often as you can tell us all the news. We hope these lines will come to hand & find all well & that we will have a spedy answer from you we have written to you but I presume you never received it. we are doing the best we can & are enjoying ourselves as well as we can so far from home and friends. we want you all to do the best you can & keep all in good hart tell all the friends to write to us as often as you can & give us all the news as we have no place to write only in the sunshine we will close our letter for the Present So farewell               Ruben Clark & T.
