My Dear Em
I now seat myself
to write a fiew lines to you,
to let you know that we are
all well at present and i hope
when this reaches you it may find
you enjoying the same blessing, i
have just recieved your letter which was
mailed the 3d of this month it has
been thirteen days on the road
and i thought i would sit down
and answer it this afternoon as it
is raining and i might as well
write as to do nothing, for i may
be on duty tomorrow and then i
will not have a chance to write for
a fiew days i also recieved a st
johns paper but there is not much
news from clinton county, you will
have to be more carefull about going
barefooted for i don’t want you
to get crippled for that will be
words than
pinching your fingers i
think, Enos Bachelder has gone to the
hospital he went last night but i
think it is more homesickness than
any thing else for he said when a
person is he ought to be at home where
they could have good care taken of them
but he would not go to the hospital
until now but i guess he is not
dangerous for he can sit up to the
table to eat yet, i have been out a
fishing this morning but i could
not have any luck i
reckon i
must Love done my fishing while i
was at home for i caught our and
i cannot have any luck here at all
but never mind this war will
be over sometime and then the
fish may go to the
old darry here
in
white river i saw one caught the
other day that weighted fifty five pounds
that i know is so for i saw it
myself, Jim Jefferys and sam shaw are a
sitting here and they shake me so i can
hardly write but may be you can read
it but if you cant, wait until i come
home and i will read it for you,
wages are good here a man can get
from one dollar and a half to two
dollars per cord for chopping wood for the
boats and on the levy they can get
one dollar per hour to unload the boats
but the soldiers does not make very
good hands for they do not like to
do that kind of work and be soldiers
to at the same time, we have not got
our pay yet and there is no signs of our
getting it very soon but you must get
along the best way you can until i can
get some money to send to you i have
not got any money nor i have not had any
since we left st louis but there is nothing
here to buy if we had money with out
paying four prices for it, so i can get
along with out money until i get
out of postage and then i shall have
to stop writing until we get our pay, i
have another one of these magazines but
i will keep it until i get where i
can get some two cents stamps before
i send it to you, we have got
a very muddy camp here but it
dries off very quick after it stops
raining, i should not think Anrs davidson
would get affended at you for not coming
to work for her when you could not
leave home, but there is not much
love
last I dont think, there is two gunboats
lays here all the time for the protection
of this
place but i dont believe there is
any rebels within twenty five miles of here
now i must close for this time and
write a letter to lois write as soon as
you get this and give all the news for
we do not get any news here at all
direct the same as before for i dont know
where we will be before this reaches you no
more at present but remain your loving
husband
