Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp 5th Mich Infy Feb 22nd 1865 Friend Rufe I have remained so long silent since I received your letter. that you have doubtless formed the opinion in this that I was not going to write you. Yours was receiv -ed in due time and I commenced to answer it but was called to perform some duty and did not get at it again. for I am rather inclined to be negligent with my correspondence Rufe since my last we have been in camp most of the time and have only moved once which was the late morning to the left the nature which you doubtless have learned through the papers long [ ? ] this. Our Regt wasnot engaged but by in the 2nd line of Battle where bullts come rather thick is he pleasant at least to me only three were wound [   ?   ] Sergt Filo Chubb Co C Duck Allen Co C and one from one of the right Cos. We received a letter from D K Halsey last wekk. He is paroled and at An -napolis [ ? ] He was wounded through the left breast and is just getting so he can get about the yard. He sent a list of Names of those that were taken the same time that he was among them is Herman Schmidt but Dave did not state if he was parol ed or not the most of them yet remain prisoners. He also says there was a William Roberson died in prison a member of the 5th Mich. I think it must have been Whiskey Bill for we hear here nothing from him since his capture. There has been a great change in the Regt since you left it. In January the Mich men of the 1st [ ? ] S.S.S. were assigned to [ ? ] Regt and yesterday the Mich regen of the 2nd Vo S.S.S. were assigned to us. So you see the have nearly as many Regts as the 60th New York and the regt already shows the effect of consolidation [ ? ] Sergts there reduced for Strg -ling in the [ ? ] more.. Maj Roat has been premated to Sgt Col and Capt Shook is maj the line officers at preserve I will not men tion sufficeit to say they are worse then any previous ones us have had since I have been a member of the regt Well Rufe what do you think of the war for my part I think it is playing out fast enough for Sherman seems to be marching unenlisted you might say where ever he c[   ?   ] lose might a telegraph depatch was read to us announcing the enacnation of Charleston B[ ? ] has been quite a number home on furlough this winter. Mr. Wilson returned a few days ago. and Allen Hicks is home now. Dam -mons is going in two or three days. The next two are Butten and myself but I am afraid the order will be revoked before the other two returns Geo Dewey has returned to the Co and is the same old leadhead as usual Michael Stepleton was court Martialed and reduced to the ranks He fell in a hole a few nights ago and sprained his ankle otherwise the Co are enjoying excellent health. Charley Chapman has got his discharge Butten got a letter this morning from Daff Orven stating that he had lost his wife and was left alone to ream again Rufe I will close this by send my best respects hoping to hear from you soon The boys all gain no sending their respects. I remain your friend and fellow soldier Geo A. Turner ER Frank
