Regiment: 1st Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Bradford, Md. December 14th, 1864 Capt. Withington, Sir, As I rest now by this home, I am one that remains of Co. K, the 1st 3 months men. I never saw you since the 1st Bull Run. I never have had the opportunity of thanking you for your kindness to me while I was sick on shooters hill or better known now as Fort Ellsworth after the battle on Meridian Hill. There was a sad Sabbath day for what was left of the company. There was many tear shed there at the supposed funeral of yours but thank God you was a prisoner. We did not know it until we got to Jackson the news was received with gladness and a welcome dinner awaited us. This I enlisted after the 26th and got 2 of my brothers with me. Last spring one of my brothers was killed on the 12th day of May in a charge made by the 2nd Corps and the other wounded. I was put into the Veteran Reserve Corps. Capt. I ask one request of you when we got to Jackson the company was disbanded and never given our discharge or any writing to prove we had been in the service. I wish if it was in power you could give me some writing to prove I was in the service. I enlisted on Saturday the 27th and on Monday 29th we left for Detroit. I enlisted with Wallace Shutt. I will close by sending my best wishes to you. Please except this from your Union soldier. I again thank you for your kindness to me. Please oblige me with a writing to prove I was a member of your company Co K, 1st Mich. Infantry 3 months men. Lieutenant Lion left the company before we went back. My patriotism is as fresh as it was in 1861. I wish you would confer the favor upon me to answer this yours as ever, A soldier Jasper E. Hall Co. K. 22nd Regt. V.R.C. Camp Bradford Baltimore, Md.
