My Own Dear Aunt Emily
it is with
the greatest of pleasure that I seat myself to pen
a few lines to you to let you know that I am well
and do hope that these few lines will find you the same.
I wrote you a letter some time ago and put it on
the desk to go off but it never went I was a looking
in the desk to day for a pen and I found the letter
but I tore it up and thought that I would write
you a new one So now you can see what is the reason
why you havent heard from me yet. and I was a waiting
to have an answer from the letter that never went. but
I thought that it was funny that I didn’t get an ans-
wer to my letter but now I know. I received a letter
from Hellen D
[ ? ]more Some time back and she said
that you had a lame foot I am sorry and
I hope that you wont be lame long. I received a letter from
Sadie Davenport and She was well with the rest of the folks
I supose that you knew that
[ ? ] is a teaching School
this summer I glad of that and she likes her school very
much. but how is Uncle
[ ? ] and Hellen are they
well.
I wrote them both but haven’t as yet received any
word from them yet but I will
[ ? ] it for
them not haveing time. but I tell you we have had some
tough old rain showers down here for a few days
past: and some of the time it is so warm that it would
almost sufocate a person but after the Shower it
would be enough
[ ? ] to make it up. and
last night it was so cool. that we had to have a
big blanket over us. but to day it is warm enough.
to over balance all the
[ ? ]ness of the night oh but
I havent told you where I am yet here I will I will.
we are stationed at Nashville that is three Companys of
us on provost duty and it is quite easy work, for
us to and dont have to go on duty but every other day
and then we have to guard prisoners that belong in the
Milatary prison while they
[ ? ] up around the houses
and streets of the City and take out about 45 a day and
each of us take a man and we have to bring him back
or else go into the prison in his place. but I havent
had to guard a prisoner but I since I have been down
here. I have been sergeant of a squad of 16 men that is
[ ? ]
and 16 prisoners and all that I had to do was to tell
them where they should work and see that they done
their work good. I tell you Aunty that we have lots to
eat and drink both Coffee and whiskey wow I dont
know but you may think that I am rather rough
to drink whiskey but I can’t see any harm in it if a
fellow dont get drunk.
I think some of lecturing on temperance are
of these days he be now dont scold me Aunty you
wont will you I had a letter from My darling little
birdie She was well and said that She had written
to Hellen and I think that She said that She had
wrote to you but I have almost forgotten oh say Aunt
Emm if you will look back under the head of the bed up in
the bedroom on the floor you will find my sisors scissors
if you havent found it before now, and did you get
that Looking glass all right that I sent you to
[ ? ]
that are that
[ ? ] broke I dont know as it is as good
a one but it was the best one that I could find of that
Sort. I tell you I took comfort awhile was at home
with my little pet of mine I am the happiest little fool
that you ever saw. I think that I have such a loveing wife
but I guess that you dont care about hearing such stuff but
dont let any buddy see this now you wont will you
but I wish that I were up there to help Hellen catch
bumble bees here you catched any more since I left, but
what kind of weather have you had since I left there and
how does the corn look in that regeon of the Country and
how did you spend the fourth of July I dident do
anything but lie and drink eggnog and
[ ? ] before
night I felt right bulley. He he he but I didnt
got to the tent I stayed to the camp and let the rest
of the boys go. and they said that they had bully
old time. but I knew that Clare would stay at
So I couldn’t enjoy myself if I had of gone. but
I supose that you will get sick of
[ ? ]
Stuff if I dont Stop by and by. and they
it
[ ? ] So poorly that it will take you a good
while to read it so pleas excuse poor writing
And spelling and pleas write as soon as you get
this and I will do the same. here is my love to you
And all the rest of the folks and give my love to Aunt
[ ? ] and
[ ? ] tell them that I should like to
Hear from them right well. give my best respect
to
[ ? ] Kelleys folks
[ ? ] and
[ ? ]and the boys and
all others. I still remain as ever
[ ? ] and
