Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Ulysses S. Grant Bridgeport Ala Feb 21 1864 Dear Brother I received yours of the 14th this morn- ing. You will see by my heading that I am not at Chattanooga. Father [  ?  ] here to report to the Lt. Col but found that he had gone to Nashville we have been waiting here ever since. Father has com- mand of this Battalion. I guess he will have to stay here all the time. I shall go to Chattanooga in Co D and so I will not be with Father but in the end I guess things will come out all night in the end. I am going to the les. And learn the drift and their I guess I shall be detailed. I may go to write for Gen. U. S. Grant at any rate his A.A.G. [          ?          ]. or if my writing [   ?   ] I could get a place [    ?    ] say any thing about this Wallace & I are stoping in the Cols. Tent with Father at present. I enjoying- self much better than I had expected to. As soon as the Lt. Col. comes Father will got to Chattanooga to get his things and later Wall. and I [          ?          ] in [   ?   ] an excitement here at present for fear John Morgan will come and destroy the bridge [  ?  ] and in that way cut off communications with Chatanooga. For two or three nights this Reg has had pickets out. All day yester- day (sunday) Father was you with Gen. [   ?   ] laying out Fortifications on the hills I am quite well expecting a cold which will soon be better. You must excuse dirty paper for everything is dirty here and where I lay my paper down it soils it My hand trembles a good day to day too I must close so Good By To                    Your Son Mother.            Newton P.
