Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Arlington Oct 6th/61 Dear Uncle I have no excuse to offer you for not writing to you before only that I have been too lazy. We drill all of the morning in skirmish ing as our regiment will have the most of that to do being the first regiment in the brigade. We have awful hot weather now I guess we are having our Indian Summer. Our New Colonel is very strict I think that he is trying to make regulars of us from the way he acts he has thribled the guard and the General told him that it would be no good because the boys would be out any way and it is about as he says the boys will be out any way The last day we were on picket two of Co. D boys went over and shook hands with the rebels and asked them how they liked the war and they said that they liked it well enough they asked them what regiment was stationed on the hill and they said they were a Alabama regiment they asked us what regiment we belonged to and we told them the Michigan Second when they said Oh! You belong to the Michigan Second do you I guess they are pretty good boys they told them they thought they were and then our boys came back. I saw a letter in the Advertiser from one of the fighting fifth as they are called take it all together it is one of the bigest storys that I ever saw published if I am not mistaken it was Mr. E. J. Shirlock that wrote it was it not tell me when you write. I had a letter wrote to you yesterday but the boys make such a noise and jared me so that the letter looked so bad that I tore it up. We did not march as we expected to but we do not know when we shal have to I dont know but what you have heard of our brigade being changed from McDowel to Heinselman division which is encamped below hunters creek about two or three miles below Alexandria and we will have to march down there before long. I have not much more to say and as it is a geting late I will have to close Give my love to all of the folks Good Bye From Ed Winchell [On Envelope:] Martin Geiger Detroit Michigan
