Brother Abe,
Being I just came out of the hospital yesterday and am not able to do much yet, I thought
I would compose a few lines to your noble self. Well Mark was in the hospital with me
but he did not get out as soon as I did but he is gaining fast. Well Abe I got so lonesome.
I did not know what to do. If I could of only come home and stayed while I was sick. I
would have given all my bounty money but there was no use of thinking of any such a
thing for I was tight. Well we are a having a pretty cold time of it just now. I hope it
won’t last long for it is pretty cold sleeping on the ground in tents. Well I like to soldier
it first rate. We have plenty to eat but we don’t have a fight or struggle. We would
like to have a little brush with them but they keep us guarding rebel property all the
time since we have been in Kentucky. Well Abe, you know I enlisted to fight in my
country’s defense not to guard Secesh property and it makes me a little mad. Well, I
have gained the good will of the Major and I have to wait on him now. I like him first
rate and I guess he likes me too, at least he said I was the best boy he ever had and he has
been in the service over a year and he knows something about it. Well Abe, I have not
received a letter from you yet and I want to have an answer to this and I want you to give
me the particulars of anything going on in Girard. Tell me how Toose gets a long. For
you know if I was home I would find out just how the thing goes.
Well when this war stops if I live we will rush farming business right along for I won’t
enlist and leave you again. Well I can’t think of anything more. Direct your letter to
