Friday morning Aug 5th 1864.
Dear Friend Herbert
Your long looked
for and much welcome letter of
July 28 was received by me last eve-
ning I had the day previous
to receiving your last mailed
a letter for you to Nashville
I will write a few lines again so
you probably will not get that in
some time if at all.
You have no doubt
thought strange that I did not
write during your illness In
the first place I was waiting for
you to reply to my last letter not
knowing that you was sick until
I went home on the fourth of July
and meant to have written immediately
I was sick all of one week so I was
not able to teach School and since
one thing and another has occurred
that I kept procrastinating and did
not write until Wenesday of this
week I am glad to learn by you
last that your health is returning
I truly hope that if may soon be en-
tirely restored to you
I am getting along
very well with my school I have four
weeks more to teach Where is your
sister Emily teaching this summer
and has she a pleasant School
Last week Mrs Escott Emma
and the Babe were up to make
me a visit and I feel somewhat
lonesome since they have gone back
I have been home three times this
Summer think I shall not go
again til the term closes
The folks at home (at the Rapids)
are all well I believe
We have had a very
dry and disagreeable summer
so very dry that it injured grass
and grains very much though I think
the
[ ? ] must have been much
more severe in some places than in
Michigan In York state they are
now foddering their Cattle
I can think of noth
ing more of importance or interest
therefore will bring this short scrawl
to a close Accept my respects
and wishes for your speedy recovery
and believe me with regard your
Friend Emma Schermerhorn
