Capt. A.M. Edwards
I received your favor of the 7th this evening -glad to hear
from you and the regiment. I read your letter to the boys – they
were much pleased to hear from you -All are doing well but –
W. W. Sands – hope he will live -Lieut. – Col. F. &
Capt. R. started for home this morning -Dr. Beech
started for the Regiment at one o’clock today -Dr. Beech and
Dr. Ward say I must remain here for several days yet and both
think my duty is here. Dr. says I should be reported as present
on hospital duty. Also Col. McFarlan – who by the way is a fine
man and an old Col. I forget what Regt. I had rather be with
the regt. but can do our own boys much more good here than I
could there. I have buried the only soldiers here that have been
buried decently and have given everyone of our boys a
Christian burial. Some days I have buried three in one day but
this only once. At our hospital the Express Office all am doing
well- with one or two exceptions, and ours is the only hospital
where they have religious services during the week. We have
worship here every morning and eve – and the boys like it.

There is about sixteen hundred Rebs and union men at
Gen. Hosp. and three hundred at Seminary and over 35 at
Express Office. I visit all the hospitals as often as I can. There
is nothing new to write about. For a day or two I have not been
well. I have been with the wounded so much that I smell blood
and the wound smell all the time and it would be a relief for me
to go to the Regiment, but my duties are in some respects
Mother of Conscience. I have written to Col. Morrow twice but
have not heard from him. If he is with the regt. tell him that I
should be glad to hear from him. Give my regards to all the
Brave 144 and tell them though I am not with them I remember
them at the throne of grace.
I am yours truly,
William C. Way
If there is any mail at the regiment for me send it to me and also
if there is any for the boys I have named send it to me and I will
give it to them. W. C. W.
I am sorry the Col. has lost his horse. I sent my horse to the
regiment by Pierson and if he is there tell Col. to use him – if he
is fit to use, he was lame when he went away.
