Part Second, Saturday Feb 13th 64
This is a beautiful morning, very
much like our October weather in
Mich – Yesterday threatened rain, but
all such signs have disappeared and
we are left “hight and dry” once more.
Perhaps rain is in store for us and
we’ll catch it in March. I have no
doubt that we’ll get enough bad weather
this spring to make make up for our
very delightful winter. Tomorrow
is “St. Valentines day”. how fast time
winds up – but we care not for
time – so that it goes quickly – We all
look forward to that happy period
when we can return to our homes
and peacefull persuits. We have had
enough of destruction. and we hope
soon to bring about a reconstruction
of our good old union- minus of
slavery. And then we sure we
will be free once more. The rebs
are indulging in great threats.
but tis like the victim of crime
dangling from the gallows. he
struggled most when life is nearly
extinct.
[ ? ] If Freding goes
home. and we remain here. I shall
want him to bring a small bundle
through to me. I will let you know
what I want in due time. My
health is just old bully. I can do
justice to good victuals any time
you can bet high on that. Tell
Father to have lots of garden
vegetables planted this spring
because I shall come home
next fall any way. and we will
have the war settled up by that
time if we can. and I think we
can. I want to make up for
the loss of
Crout +c. when I
get home. We get a kind of pickled
cabbage here. but it isn’t very
good. I board with the family
(Mr Ryans) yet. and that’s what
makes me so fat, and red
faced. I suppose.
