Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Contonement Springs Sunday May the 28th Tenn Ever time Dearly and beloved friend Mariette it is with the most good will of my heart that I seat myself in answer to your kind note which I have just recd but it surprises me the most to think that you have not heard from me only by the way of others I have written some 25 letters of which I write to you 2 or three of them and was waiting patiently to get an answer from them and now to think that you have not got any of them I directed one of them to Lamont one of them to Berlin and now I will see if this one will get to you Meriette I am glad to hear that you have taken your position in the school room I would like to go to school to so that I could call you school masin to however I will address you as such at any rate I hope that you will do a great deal of good for you young urchins (as you call them) oh I forget to tell you that I am well but I guess it is not to late yet well met I am so as to be around at any rate I was when I got your letter, I have been tough and hasty every since I have been a soldier I like the position of a soldier very well all that I complain of is that I have not seen any nice girles since I cam to was especially a school teacher I got a letter from Mary I Brittein yesterday but I had to write 2 letters before I heard a word from her. I think she is a pretty girl (dont you) I love her that I do but I think the most of my school [  ?  ] well merriette it is getting very warm down here now one camp is sit uated just 5 miles east of [  ?  ] on the bank of the river Thalsten map for that river and not to think that I am rite in sight of it well Met there are great changes in this one student changes his position to a soldier and another student changed her position to a school [  ?  ] such changes are necessary once in a while especially in this case Thare one thing more that I must tell you and that is I am writing under the influence of love and thispering my birth day perhaps that may make some difference I am just 17 years old to day I wish you was not any older I would fall in love with you, I have as it is but I expect I cannot make you believe it [  ?  ] I have heard say that a school [  ?  ] is so cross that one can not make them believe any thing only that they are abliged but I guess it is not so with you it least I hope not well I guess I have talked nonsense long enough so I will talk about the war we are expecting the regiment back every day I wish the boys would come for I am getting anxious to have something from him. Who I mean John Marshall an old friend. John who has nobly enlisted to fight for his country I wish I could see you Meriette I think it is not for myself [  ?  ] not coming home to see you before I left but I thought I [  ?  ] till I come home for good and then we will have a happy meeting I guess that I have [  ?  ] enough for this time so you must excuse this short letter and write soon my pen [rest is illegible] signed and approved by Floyd Lindsley Elijah Walcott and you well wishes George to Met Offically signed and approved by Elijah Walcott Floyd N Lindsey John C Chilcote and George Lonbach [On Envelope:] Miss Mariette Hutchins Lamont Ottawa Co Mich
