Regiment: 23rd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Bowlinggreen Nov. 17th,’62 Dear Brother, I will improve the opportunity of informing you of my whereabouts & also of what I am doing for a living. Since I last seen you I have seen some of the world & learnt what it is to be a soldier. This is not easy learnt & will not be soon forgotten. I have traveled about one hundred & 70 miles over the red clay of Kentucky carrying a knapsack that weighed some less than a hundred lbs but then we had good living & that is the main thing. I will tell you what we have had & then you can be your own judge as to how good it is. We had hard crackers that was made before the revolution war. We also had bacon that was as strong as a horse. We also had beans & rice but when we was on a march we could not cook them, but I have passed through it all and I am yet alive & well. We are now stationed in the village of Bowlinggreen as provost guards. We have been here about a week and during that time we have lived better than we have before since we left Saginaw. We expect to stay here all winter & the probability is that we will all go home in the spring so that we expect that our hard times is about over. The fourteenth Reg. is at Nashville & I intend to go & see Norman & Daniel as soon as I can get a chance. They are about 70 miles from here. Well I must close soon. You will please write soon & tell me whether you got that likenesses that I sent you. I also sent Jane & another to William Baldwin. When you write let me know if they all got through safe. Direct your letter to 23 Reg. Mich. Inft. Co. G. Louisville, KY excuse this from a friend Peter Russell
