Aunt Sophia,
I received a letter from Mary this morning in which she stated that [ ? ] said that
you was very anxious to hear from me fearing that I had been blown up on the Steamer
Hamilton. Well I wasn’t and I was not on board of her at all but got to Mobile the day
before the accident and had gone up the Tombegbee River. Since that time I have been in
Mobile a couple of weeks and have marched across the country to this place a distance of
two hundred and fifty miles and have been here since the 23
rd of this month.
It strikes me quite forcibly that I have never received any answer to the last letter I wrote
to you from Carrollton. Perhaps you have been blowed up. But if you have not I will not
blow you up this time but say those everlasting mails are again in fault. The war is ended
and all men whose terms expire prior to October 1865 are to be mustered out of the
Cavalry. It takes one hundred men out of our Regt. All Supervisory officers are to be
mustered out. I shall try to come under that head but if I can not get mustered out I shall
resign before long as I do not think duty requires me to remain absent from my family
any longer. I shant write much this time as I don’t feel like it. It is too hot. I don’t know
as you can read this scrawl. If not why you will have to wait until next time and perhaps
I can do better. All well
Yours truly
O. M. Rowland
