About the Author
Residing in Lawrence, Michigan, Sergeant Oran W. Rowland enlisted at the age of 22 in the 3rd Michigan Cavalry Company C on September 17, 1861. He was mustered into service on October 3 and was later promoted to 1st Sergeant. On April 29, 1863, Rowland was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to the Company E. He was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on October 24, 1864 and transferred to Company I. His final promotion was to Captain on November 17 and he was transferred to Company C. In January, February, and March 1865, Rowland served as the Assistant Adjutant General. Oran W. Rowland was discharged on June 6.
