Regiment: 24th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Albert M. Edwards Detroit January 14th, 1864 Capt. Albert M. Edwards My Dear Captain, We arrived here last Thursday night reported to Col. Smith next day and Saturday we received our Recruiting papers. Since that time I have been asking myself in regard to my new duties looking around to see where and how I could best succeed advising and visiting with my friends. This morning I opened an office at No. 80 Jeff. Ave. I have got a nice Flag and 250 bills scattered around in conspicuous places in and about town. My friends here are doing all they can for me and I hope that their efforts with my own will prove successful. Last week recruiting was rather dull on account of the $300. bounty being suspended but this week it has improved somewhat. I have procured no recruits yet but hope that I shall be able to report more favorable next week. My friends were all very much surprised as well glad to see me and I have had an excellent time with them. I wish that you and all my comrades in Co. F could have such privileges. I have not forgotten yet to whom I am indebted for this privilege and favor. Capt. Wagner called upon me today looked rather thin and said that he did not expect to be fit for service again. He wished to be remembered to you and the rest of Co. F. I saw Mr. Turner yesterday for a moment in Col. Smiths office. He also looked well. Mr. Wm. Fox drives an Express Wagon around town. I have not time to write a very full letter at present so you will please excuse the brevity of my note. Please extend my regards to Sergt. Chamber and Stoddard and all of the Co. F and ever believe me to be your obdt Servt for recruits & the war. Geo A Ross Detroit, Mich. P.S. I shall be glad to receive any information or advice you may feel disposed to offer respecting my new duties as you have had some experience at recruiting. Write and let me know how you all fare and get along. Your Obedt Geo. A Ross
