Mich Volunteers, Company G Jan 27 1862 M R alam [          ?          ] Bdg it is with pleasure I [     ?     ] my [   ?   ] down to write you a few [  ?  ] to let you no that i am well at present and hope this will find you the same I am now on the [     ?     ] river 5 miles south sumerset we have had [     ?     ] a [     ?     ] heer a week ago yesterday they fired on our pickets sunday morning at 6 o clock.. They came with in half a mile of camp and stoped and formed in [   ?   ] of bathe but they did not stay thare a grate while before they forced pl[  ?  ] of [   ?   ] [  ?  ] hundred of our men fought eight thousand rebles for three quarters of an hour by the water and then retreated back aways and then the rebles shouted saying you [   ?   ] cowards but when our [  ?  ] was reinfoursed and they [  ?  ] there out within [   ?   ] ours [   ?   ] fry of the [     ?     ] shot [                ?                ] he being [  ?  ] of the rebles i saved a piece of his shirt and you take it and keep it.. the blood is on it.. that ran from his hart.. i sent a peace of his coat and shirt home his coat was tore in more than a hundred peaces.. the loss on our side was about 70 [  ?  ] hundred wounded rebles killed wounded taken prisoners about 15 hundred.. they was seated along the road for 4 miles to the river [  ?  ] many drownded swiming the river i must draw to a close write some as you get this five my respects to them all.. this is from your friend William Reed direct to Lebanon Ky first regt regiment Mich ingnears Macanics Co.
