Dear Brother
I now take
this opportunity to let you know
I am safe I will have to write
a short letter for the mail leaves
at 11 oclock Our Regt was in
the last 4 Battles 2 in Virginia
2 in Maryland the
[ ? ] last we
lost a great many wounded
the fight on the mountain we
had 3 killed and the fight
on the 17
th 6 killed The Captain
was wounded in foot with a
shell had to have his foot taken
off it is very bad wound One shell
wounded 11 and killed one
man out of our Co that left
9 men in the Co 4 of those was
killed afterwards that left 5
men in the Co 1 seargent 1
Corp. 3 Privates We had
117 men at Camp Randall
Wisconsin Now there is 5 in the
Co. Some are on detached duty
We have 9 men in the Battriey
som teamesters 1 in the Construct
corps If we could get them all
back We could raise 20 men
Some of the wounded will
be back soon This is one of the
hardest fought Battles in this
war Our Brigade drove the Rebels
3 times across a field the last
time they heald it But with
heavy loss The dead are piled
one on top of the other all over
the field It is sickning to
cross the field Both of my
mess mates are killed They
were like Brothers to me all
being together Their names are
Franklin Gerlaugh & W. P.
Black Two as good boys
as ever lived I have
started two or 3 times to
go to the Regt to see them
It dont seem as though they was
killed For just after the fight
on the mountain I saw him
and he told me who was killed
and wounded in that battle
out of our Co he had just
buried George Miles and J C Nied
man and Jake Langhart I
shook hands with him and
bade him good bye for I
did not know but what he
might be killed in the next
Battle and so it was the
poor boy was shot dead
I was not in any of the Battles
I am on detached duty all
ways Genl Gibbon (Brig General)
I have been there ever
since we left Fredericks
burg I dont know how long
I shall stay You will see
a list of the killed and wounded
in some of the papers
I must now close Give my
love to Alfina and Baby
From your loving Bro
