Dear Brother + Sister
I red you last
over a week ago while out on a
reconnoitering expedition towards
Orange Court House The force was
commanded by Gen Gibbons (commanding
Gen) There was 2d Wis Regt – our Regt
of his Brigade = one of Gen Patricks 30 N.Y.
2 Squadrons of cavalry from Harris
Light Cavalry and one Squadron
of 3d Indiana Cav. also Washington’s
Battery of artillery We took the
plank – road to Gordonsville
within 10 min of that
[ ? ] and
[ ? ]
nearly to Orange Court House which
was occupied by a much superior force
of the enemy We found out all we
wanted to know So have commenced
our march back to Fredricksburg
the Rebel Cavalry followed close
They attacked the rear Guard once
But was repulsed I dont think there
was any Killed the rear guard captured
one Cavalry man No loss on our side
Our Brigade is out on just such
another trip they took two days
rations and sent them 89
more they started yesterday morn
about 2 o’clock I was left – behind
I have had the Diarrhea for 3 days
before they left So I thought I had
better Stay at home Ever Since
they had gone we have heard
about them Skirmishing with
the Rebels all the time along the
road We cant believe any of them
for there is so many The report was
that our Boys had been fighting
a great number Killed An orderlie
for Gen Gibbons came back last
night reported the Indiana Cavalry
to have been fired into by a
battery behind a brush fence But
the Infantry had no Skirmish So
that Settled the thing with us I think
this expedition is to burn the Bridge
on N. and S. Anna Rivers They are about
10 miles from Hanover Court House if
they burn them they cant reinforce
Jackson By R.R. at Gordonsville from
Richmond and with the force that
is here now we can whip Jackson
Gen Burnside with his command
are here they came By way of Aquia
Creek They are a tough looking set
of Boys They look as though they could
fight They act now as though playing
war was played out I guess old
Jackson will think Pope is a big
mouthful The Southern papers talk
about him eating up Pope It is
very hot here now and we cant
get any cooling drinks for the SD
cant get any Supplies from Washington
Government has put a stop to
it There was a man Selling ice
cream 25 cents for a little Sauce
dish full they charge us high for
Everything we The doctor told me
not to drink coffee But tea I had
to pat at the rate of $2.00 per pound
for it 7 Shilling per ounce That is pretty
high price We have been having Some
premotions in our co Orderly Sargt. is promoted
to Sargt – Magor of our Regt They are
both capible of holding – their positions
As Soon a the Boys get Back
I will write and let you know I must
now close with my best love to Both
and a Kiss for Baby
From your loving Bro.
M. Pointon
We have changed our position in the Regt Butnot
the letter We are on the left of the colours
