Sherman Camp of the 7 Michigan Oct the 24 1864 Dear wife it is with pleasure that isit down to rite afew lines to you to let you know that iam well at prest and hope thes few lines may find you the same ireceived your kind letter of the 16 this morning and was glad to hear that you was all well iwas sorry to hear that you had not got the money that isent you iam afraid that you will never get it if you dont ishal be afraid to send any more unless ican get to some office whare ican express it through but iwill try to get it to you some way dont put much dependance in my getting home this winter for it is verry uncertain but ishal try all ican but thare will be but few furloughs given this winter ithink it is verry quiet along the lines to day thare is verry little picket fireing and not much shelling but thare has been verry heavy canonading to the right but we have not herd the result yet but we expect it will be favorable for we dont get no unfavorable news here lately for Sheridan and Sherman are araising the devil with the rebs while we lay here adoing nothing but guarding the lines in front of petersburgh but that is something that must be done and it is apretty hazardous work to hold Clark Chapman is well and so is miller one week from to morrow is election and iexpect that that will turn out favorable to and thare is no doubt but what it will iam on guard and have but little time to rite so imust bring my letter to a aclose this from your affectionate husband George Phelps to his beloved wife M J Phelps
