Regiment: 22nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: George W. Morgan Camp Snows and Lexington Sept 20/62 Dear Wife + Child I take this opper- -tunity of letting you know that I am well and I hope these lines will find you the same Dear Wife I have written three letters but have received no answers to one yet It is discourag ing to see so many of the boys receive letter and received one myself. We have encamped on different ground since I last wrote to you. But we have seen no rebels yet on Thursday last we had a visit from General Morgan Cavalry and he managed to get about 60 of our men prisoner through their neglect to obey orders they were doing picket duty the enemy seemed to have managed it pretty clean if they had obeyed or [ ? ] all might have had a general engagement we we were placed on the same post the next day they were very particular about giving us orders but one of the boys of the regiment was caught sleeping on his post he was reported to head quarters I havent heard what they have done to him While we were on picket one man from our regiment shot himself with a revolver and killed himself on the spot and was buried here last night in military form making the second buried from our regiment We are called in line of battle every day on account of some report that the rebels are coming but they have not come yet maybe they will come after a while when he regiment are better drilled and then they will find it worth their while to come for I think that the boys are generally pretty gritty To day we had inspection of arms and our Company had the praise of being the best drilled and the cleanest guns of the regiment Dear Wife I wish you would try and get Walter to write for you as soon as possible for I am anxious to hear from you it seems o me there must be something the matter with some of you Dear Wife please to give my respects to hary and to all inquiring friends. My love to Father and [ ? ] my best love to yourself and our child hoping soon to hear from you From your affectionate Husband William Painter       William Camp Snows Pond               Painter Lexington Pike Kentucky Co.
