Sherman Camp near Kingston March 12 the 1865 Dear Father & mother & sisters I Rec your letter a few minutes a go and was very glad to hear from you to hear that you was well and enjoying good health I am as well as usual hoping that these few lines will find you injoying the same blessing Norton is well and tuff as a bear last night John and William Slants came to see him and he feels pretty good he dident know that they was here but they are in the same brigade and Division that we are in and bin with us for pretty near two weeks but we Dident know it since I last wrote to you We have done some pretty hard fighting the Rebles made three heavv charges on us the ninth in the night and we repulsed them every time on the forenoon of the tenth there was heavy Skirmshing on the left and center of our lines and about noon the Rebles tried to flank us on the left at half past twelve oclock all our men was called into action and the fight lasted about six hours and the enemy commenced retreating after being badly licked fireing ceaced and night came on and the next morning there wasent a Reble to be seen but while they was at it they fought Desperately but we was to meny for them there loss was pretty heavey In killed and wounded while our was but small compared with there loss in killed and wounded in our regt dident exceed twenty in all our loos in all wont Excede two hundred & fifty killed and wounded the Rebles took some of our men prisoners but a good meny of them got away from them we took a good meny more prisoners from them and they did from us three to one I think the next place that we have to take is Kingston this fight was within three miles of there but I think the rebles will Avacuate the place and leave it before we get there old Sherman is a coming up in the rear of them that what made them come out here to fight us when you write to me let me know if you got that money that I sent home while I was in Alexandria I have written you two letters since then Sence I bin in north Carolina I haven’t heard from david for six weeks let me know all the news that you know it is warm down here the peach trees is a coming out in blossom and the blue birds sing and frogs tell freed folks they must write to me and I will answer tell them that I send my best respects to all of them and the rest of the friends Write to me soon as you get this for I am ancious to hear from home tell me if you are a making Sugar this Spring and how the folks is around the corners John N Knowles to all Write Soon Adress Co.
