About the Author
John Knowles, of Wayland, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 28th Michigan Infantry Company I on September 2, 1864 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was mustered into service on September 6 at the age of 23. John Knowles was discharged for disability on December 21, 1865 at New Berne, North Carolina.
