Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp at St Louis Mo. May 16th 1864 Dear Wife I have a few moments of time to spare and will improve by writing to you as it may be the last opportunity I will have perhaps in a few weeks as we are ready now and under Marching Orders Jane what is the reason why you have not writen or had some one write for I am nearly woried to death. I heard by one of Donivans corispondence that you was hurt and nearly dead that the Doct thought you could not live Now you cant imagine with what anxiety I have looked for a letter from there Carl wrote you was very bad off but thought you would get along. And I pray to God you may for what joy and peace would there be for me on this World of sin and war But all I can do is to wait and hope. Oh if it was not for hope we have miserable life would be and this is the reason why we should cultivate it more Jane here let me say I received a letter from Ant Almy and Jane they are well but Aunt Almy has me with another of troubles such as all have to meet her father is dead I tell you she wrote me a good letter and such as all of those who have had the trouble she has had can unite said she would send me her Photograph next time Jane wrote very well it seems strange that I dont hear any thing from daniel or Mary I wrote to them long time ago but all I can say I cant make them write if they dont want too. Oh Jane how I wish I could be there to take care of you or help But I dont wory for I cant And I know you are among those that are interested in your wellfare who will do all they can for you dont spare money if you want any thing get it let it cost what in may and if you hant got any tell Phillipp Eckler or Uncle Henry or Father and I can send some before long to you I hope they talk of transfering us into Infantry But I guess they will have a Right smart time of it as the saying is I suppose we are bound for Little Rock Arkansas we are waiting for transpor tion haven’t got a horse yet and dont know when we will All of the Boys are up in end about it and I would not wonder if the Regt was placed under an Arest for our Officers say they never will Recipt for any arms And some say they will received a Dishonorable Discharge befor they will be transferred But I can stand it the rest can until fall and then I guess I will be free give my best repects to all And kiss trudy for me Yours until death Mitchell H Hogmire Oh if I had the wings of a dove I would fly to one I love better than life, Jane Jane keep up good courage and try and get well And if I ever live to come home I will try to make home as it ever has been a home I have enjoyed and pleasant to you
