Dear Wife Jane
As I have a few moments to spare
I will improve them by writing to
you this leaves me well & truly
hope it may find you enjoying the
same health I wrote to you yesterday
in reply to one I received which bore
date of March 10th But I feel as
though you would like to hear from
me often while here and I will
try and write as often as I can
and I want you to do the same
I have not been down town
yet but Edwin was yesterday
He said he never saw as nice a
city in his life I mean to try
and visit it before we leave
here. I tell you money is os
scarce in the company one cant
get any money I have not had
any for a long time but I live
in hopes I will if pay day ever
comes and then I will send
you some but untill then I can
try and get along as well as
you can, and I know you will
and I trust all will be right
It has been raining
some and it is most awful mucky
here one can hardly get around
hope we may soon leave this place
& think we will as soon as the
Brigade gets here it is the report
that we are to cross Lake Ponchatrain
and move North East through Miss
and Alabama to the Captial of
Ala Montgomery I am in hopes
we will get paid off before we
go. I have a box of things that
I will express home if we leave
home on horse back so I cant take
take it with me
April 5th 65
Jane you will see by the begin
ing of this that I did not
send it when I intended too
I received one from you that
bore date of March 17th yesterday
stating your health was good I am
truly glad to hear of that and I
hope you may ever be blessed
with the same Edwin received a
letter from Mother the same time
that bore date 13th but the reason
of that was the mail was stoped
at Morganzy Bend for it was
supposed when we left the mouth of
White River that Morganzy was our
destination Jane I have not said
any thing about out healths but
they are good Oh how I wish you
could be here to see some of the gar
dens Cabages turnips onions
green peas lettice salads of all
kinds are in the market now
In the market a man can get all kinds
of fish oisters & every thing on can
think of and that cheap too if he had
money but we dont get any of that yet
I had heard & read of the suny south
But never tell now have I seen it
Oranges are mostly gone but I have
seen them on the trees ripe & the
tree all in bloom I am not sory that
we moved from Arkansas Every
thing is much cheaper. Tell Aunt
Kit & Mother I wish they were here
to eat oisters can buy them for
50 cents per busel in the shell I never
saw one in the shell till I came here
Quite a greeny aint I
I have no more to write this time &
so I will close by saying that it is the
talk that the men that enlisted in
62 & 63 are to be mustered out soon
Kiss trudy for me Give one for
me and give my best respects to all
Yours Truly M H Hogmire
