Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp of the Third Mich Cavalry Jackson, Tennessee Jan 24, 1863 Dear Parents it is with pleasure I take this opportunity to inform you of my present health which is very good also all of the Boys here We have gone into winter quarters & just now we have plenty to do Building Stables & log cabins ditching etc etc It has been a long time since I received a letter from you But do not despair for I will have the more when they come I answered your kind letter & hope you got it for I sent Ten Dollars in it write & let me know & if you got the five I sent you when at Water Valley the last I have received from you was dated Sunday Eve Dec 21, 62 & since then I have sent fifteen dollars to you or Jane I will now give you a little sketch of our move down to Coffee Ville & our retreat from there I wrote to you all about our advancing & our retreat back to Holley Springs here we went in to camp for a few days was mustered for pay on the 31 of Dec in the morning & started for this place on the second day we came to Grand Junction here I saw Cub Whitney but didit see Edmond Hogmire he was out of town watching a secesh prisoner but he was well we stopped here about 15 minutes at night we camped at Middleburg where the 12 was here we saw Charley Luce he was well also Chubback & Ed Stillwell & Ed Rice he is now Corporal Rice at night we camped about 10 miles from Jack next morning came to town & mooved out of town to the East 1 mile left our sick & on a scout we went of three days had fines times you may guess. Duane you spoke of my being there to rid your colt I think I could do it but as to riding I think we have our share things rather dark I suppose at the north but it is allsways the darkest before day you wanted me to answer all of your questions as to our mode of living I shave every week when I can & change my clothes once in two weeks as to sundays we have none for our duty is the same every day Ed is a good soldier so all think Edmond is a better boy than he use to be for this reason he cant get liquor Jane you want to know what we have to eat we are now living on quar ter rations but I can stand it if the rest can I am sure I suppose we will get paid off in a few days for two months you can let the money I sent home if you have a chance if not get Gold for it I have quite a lot of money here but think I can do better with it here than to send it now Write & let me know if you got all the money I sent Dave & all of the boys are well Dave got a letter stating John & Ike was at home John is owing me 10 dols & I am owing Ike some & I will send an order for John to pay Ike & you the rest Excuse mistakes Yours truly MHH to his parents & Trudy
