Dear Parents it is with pleasure
I take this opportunity to inform you of my present
health which is very good also all of the Boys here
We have gone into winter quarters & just now
we have plenty to do Building Stables & log cabins
ditching etc etc It has been a long time since I received
a letter from you But do not despair for I will have
the more when they come I answered your kind letter
& hope you got it for I sent Ten Dollars in it
write & let me know & if you got the five I sent you
when at Water Valley the last I have received
from you was dated Sunday Eve Dec 21, 62
& since then I have sent fifteen dollars to you
or Jane I will now give you a little sketch of
our move down to Coffee Ville & our retreat from
there I wrote to you all about our advancing
& our retreat back to Holley Springs here we went
in to camp for a few days was mustered
for pay on the 31 of Dec in the morning & started
for this place on the second day we came to
Grand Junction here I saw Cub Whitney but
didit see Edmond Hogmire he was out
of town watching a secesh prisoner but he
was well we stopped here about 15 minutes
at night we camped at Middleburg where
the 12 was here we saw Charley Luce he was
well also Chubback & Ed Stillwell & Ed
Rice he is now Corporal Rice
at night we camped about 10 miles from Jack
next morning came to town & mooved out of town
to the East 1 mile left our sick & on a scout we went
of three days had fines times you may guess.
Duane you spoke of my being there to rid your
colt I think I could do it but as to riding I think
we have our share things rather dark I suppose at
the north but it is allsways the darkest before day
you wanted me to answer all of your questions
as to our mode of living I shave every week when
I can & change my clothes once in two weeks as to
sundays we have none for our duty is the same
every day Ed is a good soldier so all think Edmond
is a better boy than he use to be for this reason
he cant get liquor Jane you want to know
what we have to eat we are now living on quar
ter rations but I can stand it if the rest can
I am sure I suppose we will get paid
off in a few days for two months you
can let the money I sent home if you have
a chance if not get Gold for it I have quite a
lot of money here but think I can do better
with it here than to send it now
Write & let me know if you got all
the money I sent Dave & all of the boys
are well Dave got a letter stating John
& Ike was at home John is owing me 10 dols
& I am owing Ike some & I will send an
order for John to pay Ike & you the rest
Excuse mistakes
Yours truly MHH
to his parents & Trudy
