Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Head Quarters 5th Regt.          Camp Mich.    Co. C February 15th, 1862 Dear Parents, We received yours of the 5th on the 12th & were glad to hear of your good health. The reason of my writing today is because this Regt. is going on picket tomorrow, but I shall not go unless I can a pair of shoes big enough for me. As we look over the soil of Virginia we behold it covered with snow & still snowing. We went over to the 4th Regt. last Wednesday & staid over night with C. Marten & O. E. Perry and returned by way of Stocton’s Regt. where we spent a few pleasant hours with L. Frask, his health is good. Martin says he was never tougher & Perry is as fat as a lard tub. The health of the 4th Regt. is good not a man is in the hospital. The call for supper has been sounded & I must postpone until evening as you know I never refuse such an opportunity. The news of the Capture of Fort Donaldson arrived about 1/2 hour ago. The band came out & played the “Star Spangled Banne”, “Dixie” & other national airs. The news of the capture of the Fort & the stricke which the Burnside expedition made caries great joy among the soldiers. A few more such strikes as that & I believe this rebellion will be put down & our country once more left in peace with the world; but I am determined to see the “end of the race” should the war last five years The measles is not as bad as it was when we wrote last & I guess I will escape them at least I hope so. I don’t believe I can think of any more to write so I will close by bidding you all good bye. From your affectionate Son, Luther Franklin John Franklin
