[6/3/1862]
I have wrote until I am
tired. I sent home $20 last pay
day & would have sent five
more if Elbridge had not
been at the hospital & I not
knowing how long before he
would get his pay I sent him
$4 I know how it feels to
be at the hospital with out
money. it is not very plesent
but if he gets his pay soon he
will no doubt send you some
as he will have considerable money
[ ? ] The boys have great hopes
that after Richmond is
taken this regt will be
ses
sent home to recruit up
us
they it would fill up
twice as quick if the Regt
was there than it would
to send home recruiting
Officers.
there & then send on the
men. Our knapsacks have
just arrived & i guess I shall
have a clean shirt on before
a great while.
Mother why if you are not
well will you work if there
is not youngones enough
around there to milk I
would let the milking go
the cows can suck cant
they & I would let them
suc
suck. but let a cow run
around here that gives milk
& there is 2 men at evry tit
I think if ours should
strole around here I guess
you would not complain
about milking O! how the
soldiers love milk & hen-
roost eggs are sold here
for 40 cts. per. day.
&1/3 of them is rotten. the
boys buy a great many
unless I can find a
stamp this P M I will have
to send this with out one
it is impossible to bye them
here unless the sutler fetches
up some stamped envelopes
for which we have to pay five cts
If you do not receive a
letter from me evry week
you must not be alarmed
as it is hard work for and
to write & after you get the
letter it is hard work to
read it & it is hard to
get paper & envelopes.
but as our knapsacks have come
I will have a portfolio to put it
in but I hate to send a letter
without paying the postage.
No more at present this from
your affectionate Son E Franklin
