Regiment: 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Bull Run, Virginia Historical Figures: Camp on Uptons Hill Va Sept 6th /62 Dear Sister I suppose you think that I am very neglectful of my duty to you or that something serious has happened to me Capt. Colwell recd your note request- -ing him to inform you what had became of me. I am happy to be able to answer it myself for there is nothing the matter with me at present- but I have been sick for five weeks I am not able to do duty yet on acco= =unt of my knee which as troubled me more or less for the past 8 years- but as soon as I get a little stronger my knee will be all right again we have had another battle on the famous field of Bull Runn -our regt lost 286 killed wounded + missing Col O Connor was killed our regt will probably go into camp near Washington to recruit there is only 150 men left of the one thousand + fifty that enlisted in the 2nd Wis fifteen months ago-but I cant write much now for they are moving about so much + fixing camp-but I will write again soon I want this to go this m =orning-please write Nancy that I am well no more at present write soon G.W.F.
