Regiment: 17th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Hospital No 2 Crab Orchard Nov 7 th 1865 Dear friend Abbie, Our good friend Holmes has just arrived here on his way to Mich, + I take the opportunity to send a brief reply to your kind letter rece’d some time since, I ought to have written some days ago, but have been rather busy removing our Camp etc We are now in the Village, having removed all the sick into three different Hosp’s where they can recover much better [ ? ] by being “camped out”. I have charge of Hosp’l No 2 as Hosp. Steward. We occupy an old building formerly a Hotel, which proves a very convenient place for the purpose. There are now [ ? ] between 80 + 90 patients. of the second glass of sick man. We class sick men here. Was very happy to receive your letter + it gives me much pleasure in replying, but I fear this will hardly prove to you very interesting I have not felt well for a few days past – + this evening am laboring under a very severe head ache You will I trust [ ? ] of this as the best I can do this time So far as [ ? ] are concerned in this benighted part of the world I must say is [ ? ] scarce but Mr Holmes will no doubt make up any deficiencies on my part, as he will have much to tell you. Except my sincere thanks for you kind letter + believe me I shall to make my next more worthy a reply from you. Am feeling a little faint just now, therefore am compelled to close. my love to all.
