Dear friend Abbie,
Our good friend
Holmes has just arrived here on
his way to Mich, + I take the
opportunity to send a brief
reply to your kind letter rece’d
some time since, I ought to have
written some days ago, but have
been rather busy removing
our Camp etc We are now in
the Village, having removed all
the sick into three different Hosp’s
where they can recover much
better
[ ? ] by being “camped
out”. I have charge of Hosp’l No 2
as Hosp. Steward. We occupy an
old building formerly a Hotel, which
proves a very convenient place for
the purpose. There are now
[ ? ] between
80 + 90 patients. of the second glass
of sick man. We
class sick men here.
Was very happy to receive your letter
+ it gives me much pleasure in
replying, but I fear this will
hardly prove to you very interesting
I have not felt well for a
few days past – + this evening am
laboring under a very severe head ache
You will I trust
[ ? ] of this
as the best I can do this time
So far as
[ ? ] are concerned
in this benighted part of the world
I must say is
[ ? ] scarce
but Mr Holmes will no doubt
make up any deficiencies on my
part, as he will have much to
tell you.
Except my sincere thanks
for you kind letter + believe me
I shall to make my next more
worthy a reply from you.
Am feeling a little faint
just now, therefore am compelled
to close. my love to all. Don’t
fail to wriht soon.
Very truly your
Friend
Horatio T Cliff
