January 16th 1864 My Dear Wife My Mary I have been very busy since my last was written. building a new. Yesterday Captain Garrison and myself started from camp for the purpose of finding a place to Keep “Our Wives” provided they would [ ? ] to pay us a visit. After meeting a dozen refusals. this morning we found what we sought. Two very old ladies living along. After much persuasion consented to do the best they could to make thing pleasant. Therefore if you think you can endure a soldiers fare a week I would be the “Happiest man alive” to meet you at the earliest possible moment at my head Quarters. You will bring a riding habit and such things as you will need in the two months time if it is agreeable after you get here. Please have Father hire a good side saddle and put it in an extra trunk and bring along, or I suppose I can not do that he had better buy one. I am expecting we will be paid very soon but if you can come without my sending any money please do so. Write soon what day you are going to start several days ahead so I can be at the station. There is a Passenger train once a day out of Washington to this place if you cannot connect through with that you had better stop over night in Washington. the National or Metropolitan are good houses to stop at both first class houses If you can come next week do so.
