Regiment: 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: March the 7th Carrier Ill Dear father and mother i supose your thinking by this time that i have quite forgotton i dont blame you a bit but you must allow some [illegible] in which i am placed i am on detacth [   ?   ] myself and another one out of our company we where taken from our company sent on to Carrior Illinois and i am now on board of the gun boat [ ? ] city we went down the river the other day to Clombus they sent us a flag of truce and all we had to do was to turn back again we came back to ancer the same night we recieved orders to go up to fort Lonoson we sailed up the river three days and nights the third day we broke our engine of the boat we tied our boat to a tree and lay there four days when tow boats steam boats came up to towe as down again so here we are back again at Carior ill i should have written to you before to let you now where i am but same of the [         ?         ] on board this stole my paper and stamps i had to brrow this paper and stamp of one of our company that came with me his name is Bice a Cornishman Weare laying here at carrios now fitting up our old gun boat which in shape is somting like a mud turtul and it cant sail much faster we aer in Camidores fotes fleet some of the fleet went down the river yester day the rebels have run away from Clombus they spked some of there guns and thrould a great many in the river and run like Devels i forgot to menton that wen we went down there on Sundy they fired 3 or four shels at us but we where out of there reach and there firing was no good i expect that we shal be here a week yet if you get this letter send me one right away we get noting to read on board of this boat i dont know when we shal get any money here it out like a solder some times you dont get any for four or five monts i hope this ware will be over soon i am sick of it it is very cold here in carrior three times as cold as it is in Washington we had snow here yesterday and it is very cold give my love to all the children from your afettnat son Richard Chesterfield Direct to Mr Richard Chesterfield US Gun Boat Moun City Carrior Ill
