Regiment: 4th Michigan Calvary Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Near Stevenson Ala May 6, 1864 Early Friday morning My dear Davidson Thus far are we on our way to Chattanooga. We left Columbia on the 30th ult and have been steadily “marching on” since. Yesterday we again crossed the Cumberland Mountains. I am now sitting at the foot of one of them, time 6 ½ A.M. about 2 miles from Ste- venson, writing on the most primitive kind of a stand. The command is getting ready for an- other day’s march. We expect to be in Chat- tanooga in a couple of days. All the troops that have been guarding railroads in this section of the country have been sent to the front. Very few are here. There must be an immense army near Chattanooga. We hear rumors of a battle taking place at Dalton, tho nothing definite. Of course we expect to win here in the next fight. We also hear rumors of a Virginia battle. Have you heard any thing from Willy lately? Write me soon Your affect brother J.
