My dear Mother
We have a day or two to rest
here after continual marching and watching
since I wrote you on the 13
th inst. I have
yet thus far been very fortunate and am
as well as ever. On the 15
th and 18
th our
command was engaged but not very se-
riously. On the latter day the 4
th Michigan
had one officer taken prisoner and three wounded.
On the 19
th I thought we were in for a regular
pitched battle, but we escaped that. There
was some very hard fighting within two miles
we sat upon our horses expecting to be ordered
in. Since then we have been remaining
on the North side of the Etowal River making
preparations to cross. To-morrow morning early
we are to start again. We shall ford the
river near here and push forward toward
Atlanta. It is reported this afternoon that we
are to push forward to-morrow leaving every-
thing behind us so that we shall probably not again
be heard of until the campaign is over in a month
or so. This is all rumor, as we soldiers know
very little of intended movements.
I will write again as soon as I get an op-
portunity. I try to keep Davidson well hosted.
I received a letter from him yesterday. He
it appears, is to be married on the 8
th prox.
Happy dog! I can not possibly be there, as
I have to attend to other business at present.
We are so busy that I cannot write more.
Give my love to all. I hope to see you
this fall. God bless you
Your affec son
