Mrs Saml. P. Babcock
Three Rivers. St Joseph Co.
Michigan
Dear Madam.
I suppose Mrs
Mary A. Newcomb of
Litchfield Ill.
has written to you
concerning your hus-
bands death. but
for fear that you
should not receive her
letter I send this
word to you
Mr Babcock died
on board the Steamer
“Empress” at
Mem
Memphis wharf sept
10
th about noon.
His remains wrapped
in
[ ? ] blankets
were given into the
hands of the authorities.
At Cairo Mrs Newcomb
expressed to you his
knapsack enclosing. I
suppose. his pocket book
& twenty dollars $20 which
he gave to her to send
to you.
You may be comforted
by knowing that we did
what we could to make
his last hours comfortable.
I feel sure he died a
Christian man & my-
self hope to meet him
one day in Heaven.
If you are a Christian
Be comforted & cheered
by the hope that you
will meet him & if you
are not Wont you
turn to God & love
Him that your Dear
Husbands home may
be yours also?
Ever yours
