About the Author
William H. Wheeler, of Adrian, Michigan, enlisted as a Corporal in the 1st Michigan Cavalry Company E on August 21, 1861 at Coldwater, Michigan. He was mustered into service at the age of 26 on September 4. Wheeler was transferred from Company E to Company K and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on November 12, 1862. He served on General George A. Custer’s staff as aide-de-camp in April of 1863. Later, he was transferred from Company K to Company G in February of 1864. William H.
