George Oswath resided in Detroit, Michigan when he enlisted as a Private in the 5th Michigan Infantry Company A on August 23, 1862. He was mustered into service at the age of 33 on September 14. Oswath was listed as being wounded on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On June 10, 1864, he was transferred from Company A to Company B.
