About the Author
Franklin P. Nichols, of Otisco, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 6th Michigan Cavalry Company E on August 29, 1862 at Ionia, Michigan. He was mustered into service on October 11 at the age of 30. On October 15, Nichols was transferred from the 6th Michigan Cavalry to the 7th Michigan Cavalry Company A and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.
