About the Author

William Hutchinson, of Detroit, Michigan, enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 24th Michigan Infantry Company G on August 13, 1862. He was mustered into service that same day at the age of 23. Hutchinson was listed as being wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and again on June 19, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. He was transferred from Company G to Field and Staff on August 2. He received several promotions including Captain on March 10, 1863 and Major on June 19, 1864. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the Civil War. William Hutchinson was discharged on June 30 at Detroit, Michigan.
