Residing in Hillsdale County, Michigan, Robert A. Everett enlisted as an Assistant Surgeon in the 5th Michigan Infantry Field and Staff on July 3, 1861 in Fort Wayne, Michigan. He was mustered into service on August 28 at the age of 21. On April 18, 1863, he was discharged for promotion to Surgeon and was later commissioned into the 16th Michigan Infantry on May 13.
