John C. Buchanan resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan when he enlisted in the 8th Michigan Infantry Company D on August 12, 1861. He was mustered into service as a 1st Lieutenant on September 23 at the age of 38. Buchanan was promoted to Captain on September 1, 1862. He was listed as being wounded at Antietam, Maryland on September 17 and returned to his regiment on October 20. John C. Buchanan resigned from service on May 3, 1864.Documents for this Author:
