Regiment: 28th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: My dear wife and children, I wish you a happy New Year’s this morning. I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. I have been sick with the measles for three weeks. Yesterday was the first I have set up. I was in the hospital. I call it a hard place for a sick man. It will be two or three weeks before I can go to my regiment. It is one mile from here now. We will stay here and do police duty this winter. It is a good place for us we are in Nashville not Louisville. There has fighting near Louisville in more than a year. General Hood invaded Nashville for 16 days, but it was fortified, so he could not make any impression on the place. They fot 5 days after we got hear. Our men went out and attacked them. Our boys was put in the trenches where they could see the fiteing, and after our men got them on the retreat, our boys went out, gathered up the dead, and buried them. I was hear at the time so I did not go with them. They taken one-half of Hoods forse and all of his cannon. They air following him now. Thear is no more danger of any more fighting here. I don’t want you to pay any debts I made before I came here. I owed not teen 10 dolars i do in tend to pay her soon but what money you have got I want you to keep for to take care of your self and children. i would to know how mutch money you have got at present if hant has not drawn that pay you go to harvy and get him to draw it. he said he would draw if for 5 dolars put it in a pen for you donte traid a bit of it to him for stalks get it home and give the [ ? ] all she will eate thear will be enough if you get a teen and a half that I paid for tel me whear nab is now bee shure and tell me how mutch money you have got now and if you have lent any to any body I spend a good deal of money for something to eat. I cannot live on what the government furnishes for us here. I should die if I had to. I will close now by bidding you A Happy New Year’s. Direct your letter to Amos Gibbs, Co. G, 28th Mich. Infantry, Nashville, Tennessee. My ink has been froze so it is not good. The ground is just covered with snow. Write as soon as you get this and I will as soon as I get smart. God Bless you all.
